Prof. Matthias Garschagen, Chair of Human Environment Relations at the Department of Geography and Dr. Deepal Doshi, postdoctoral researcher in the same group, were invited to visit the Indian Institute of Human Settlements (IIHS) in Bengaluru on 24. November, 2025 by Prof. Aromar Revi, founding Director of IIHS and Associate Prof. Chandni Singh from the School of Environment and Sustainability at IIHS.
The day kicked off with a lecture by Prof. Matthias Garschagen to the first semester Master Students in urban policy and climate change. The lecture stimulated an engaging discussion with the students on topics spanning across the latest negotiations at COP 30 in Belem, empirical findings from our TRANSCEND project in Mumbai, downscaling of SSPs and shaping new social contracts for climate change adaptation. After the seminar, there was a meeting and introduction to some of the scientists at IIHS and their ongoing research projects covering diverse themes such as migration, sustainability of food systems, rural-urban integration with an emphasis on India and the Global South, public policy and planning. Many ideas for research collaboration were discussed, including joint publications, staff exchanges at the PhD/Postdoc (early career researchers) level, potential proposal applications and possible funding lines.
The afternoon block of the visit was dedicated to rich discussions on topics pertaining to the upcoming IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities between IPCC Coordinating Lead Authors (Prof. Revi and Prof. Garschagen), Lead Author (Prof. Singh) and Chapter Scientists (Dr. Jennath and Dr. Doshi).
